Most of us know the value of self-care, but in the in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it is often the first thing that gets rescheduled or pushed to the side. We expect that we should be able to maintain the momentum, stay constantly in motion, and continue to pour into other people, even without refilling our own tank. In this situation, many of us would tell a friend that it is okay to slow down and catch your breath, but we hold ourselves to a higher (and unrealistic) standard.
Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s vital to human functioning at the highest levels. The World Health Organization defines self-care as the ability of individuals to prevent disease, maintain health, and effectively cope with illnesses when they do happen without the support of a health worker. This means, that when we fail to identify and practice self-care, we are setting ourselves up to not only being unable to take care of others, but to need someone to take care of us.
Keep in mind, self-care doesn’t have to be a big event or big expense, but it does need to be personal, deliberate, and prioritized. Maybe you allow yourself the time to read a book or listen to a podcast for fun, reach out to an old friend, or treat yourself to your favorite sweet treat. Your activities can be different and varied every week, but it is important to have something on your calendar every week that feeds your soul. My self-care this week included a yoga class, a hike at a local nature trail, and an at-home manicure.
I have seen the impact not taking this time has on a person’s mental, physical, and emotional being and I want to help people get started with a new and positive habit. In March I will be hosting Monday Mindful Moments- a free, 30-minute virtual break where we will learn to “breathe right,” explore guided meditations, and experience the impact on your ability to relax using progressive muscle relaxation activities. This is a “come as you are” event, camera-off, and no expectations that you do anything but nurture yourself. You can register for the March 3 event at https://lnkd.in/gBGr_qV8
